Claude Haiku 5.5
October 8, 2026
Anthropic released Claude Haiku 5.5 yesterday, October 7, 2026. It is the smallest and fastest model in the Claude 5.5 family, completing the trio that began with Opus 5.5 on September 22 and Sonnet 5.5 on September 28.[1]
The Claude Model Tiers
Claude models come in four tiers, from smallest to largest: Haiku, Sonnet, Opus, and Mythos. Haiku is the cheapest and fastest, designed for high-volume, low-latency workloads. Mythos is only available to select organizations, with Fable serving as a safeguarded public version.[2]
The 5.5 generation now has all three public tiers released within a three-week window:
- Claude Fable 5.1, September 1, 2026
- Claude Opus 5.5, September 22, 2026
- Claude Sonnet 5.5, September 28, 2026
- Claude Haiku 5.5, October 7, 2026
What Haiku Is For
Haiku models are built for speed. They target use cases where latency matters more than maximum reasoning depth: classification, moderation, summarization, routing, and high-volume API calls. The previous Haiku, version 4.5, was released October 15, 2025 and ran for nearly a year before being superseded.[3]
Anthropic's tiering strategy means developers can mix models within a single pipeline. Use Haiku for the fast first pass, Sonnet for deeper analysis, Opus for the hard problems. The 5.5 generation aligns all three tiers on the same training base, which should reduce the consistency gaps that appeared when mixing 4.5 Haiku with 5.0 Sonnet.
The Broader Picture
The Claude family has grown significantly beyond chat. Claude Code, the terminal coding agent, went viral during the 2025-2026 winter holidays and has been adopted by Microsoft and Google.[4] Claude Cowork, a GUI version for non-programmers, launched in January 2026 and was added to Chrome in August 2026.[5] Claude Science, focused on biology research and drug development, entered public beta on June 30, 2026.[6]
The constitution that governs Claude's behavior has grown from 2'700 words in 2023 to 23'000 words in 2026, reflecting Anthropic's increasingly detailed approach to AI alignment.[7]
Context
Anthropic was designated a "supply chain risk" by the U.S. Department of Defense in February 2026 after refusing to remove contractual prohibitions on using Claude for mass domestic surveillance and fully autonomous weapons. A federal judge blocked the designation in March and permanently set it aside in August 2026 as unconstitutional retaliation.[8]
The company also reported in August 2025 that a cybercrime group designated "GTG-2002" had used Claude Code in a data-extortion campaign against at least 17 organizations, and in November 2025 that a China-based group had used Claude Code to automate 80-90% of its espionage attacks against 30 organizations.[9] These cases highlight the dual-use tension that comes with releasing capable agentic tools.
