One in Fifteen

In 2025, one in every 15 employees in Luxembourg's private sector and civil service reported having suicidal thoughts. That is three times as many as a decade ago.

The data comes from a survey conducted by the Chamber of Employees, published on Friday in their latest Betterwork report. Pressures in the professional world are increasing, and the impact on workers' mental and physical health is measurable.

The Chamber was careful to note that suicidal thoughts do not necessarily mean suicidal acts have increased to the same extent. But the data points to a worrying rise in psychological strain at the workplace.

Work is rarely the sole cause, the report acknowledged. Suicide almost never has a single trigger. But the data shows that work can harm people just as easily as it can protect them.

The Chamber called on employers to improve working conditions, create workplaces with better mental health support, monitor employee wellbeing, and contribute to suicide prevention.

In Luxembourg, people struggling with suicidal thoughts can contact the SOS Detresse helpline on 45 45 45. More information is available at www.prevention-suicide.lu.
