First Class
Since the introduction of free public transport in 2020, sales of first-class tickets have risen remarkably in Luxembourg. Five years ago, around 25'500 first-class tickets were sold. This year, the figure reached 38'200, a rise of nearly 50%.
Despite the increase, first-class carriages remain underused. Average occupancy rates range between 10% and 16%. Second-class compartments are much busier: on trains between Luxembourg and Metz, second-class occupancy ranges from 38% to 96%.
The figures came in response to a parliamentary enquiry to Mobility Minister Yuriko Backes. Monthly first-class season tickets have increased slightly, while yearly subscriptions have dropped modestly, now standing at just 200.
On average, just 13% of first-class seats are reserved across the network. Conductors are authorised to offer first-class seats to second-class passengers on the spot, provided second class is overcrowded and first class is underutilised.
Free transport for everyone, and a few people willing to pay for a quieter seat.
