Four Lines
CFL is tearing up track on four major rail lines this summer, and the disruption runs through the end of September. If you commute by train in Luxembourg, check your route.
The four affected lines are Luxembourg-Wasserbillig-Trier, Luxembourg-Ettelbruck-Troisvierges-Gouvy, Luxembourg-Thionville-Metz, and Luxembourg-Esch-sur-Alzette-Rodange. Some segments have already been closed since mid-July. Others shut down this week.
The headline closures: no trains between Luxembourg and Germany from August 24 to September 20. No trains between Ettelbruck and Gouvy from August 24 to September 14. The Thionville line is already out until August 23. The Esch-sur-Alzette line has staggered closures through August.
CFL is running replacement buses in cooperation with German and French partners. The operation involves around 200 drivers and nearly 1'000 bus trips per day during work periods. Passengers can also use RGTR and TICE network buses. Full replacement schedules are on the CFL website.
The works cover maintenance and modernisation across the network, including major construction projects at Howald and other stations. CFL has not published a completion date for all projects, but normal service should resume by early October.
Summer is peak construction season for European rail networks. Luxembourg's is more disruptive than most because so much of the network converges on a single capital station. One closure ripples across the whole system.
