Closed for Renovation
If you need a new US passport or a visa stamp, you have about two weeks. After that, the US Embassy in Luxembourg is shutting its doors for routine consular services.
From August 24 to September 11, 2026, the embassy will not offer in-person passport applications, citizenship documentation, routine visas, or notarial services. The closure is for renovations. Emergency assistance will still be available for US citizens in distress.
There is one workaround. US citizens eligible for mail-in passport renewal can still submit applications by post. No in-person visit needed. But anyone not eligible for the mail-in route will have to travel to another US embassy or consulate during the three-week window.
Interview-waived diplomatic and official visa applications will continue to be processed. Everything else stops. The embassy has not said what specific renovations are underway, only that the closure runs from late August through mid-September.
For anyone with US citizenship paperwork or visa needs in Luxembourg, this is a three-week wall. Plan around it or plan to travel.
