First it was Digicash. Then Payconiq. Now Wero. The new European payment app launches in Luxembourg on September 1, 2026, and five banks are on board from day one: Spuerkeess, Raiffeisen, Post, BGL BNP Paribas, and BIL[1].

The launch was originally planned for July but got pushed back to make sure everything works. Ralf Hamal, responsible for Luxembourg and Belgium at the European Payments Initiative, said they wanted to test "all cases, from payments between friends, to payments in shops, bills for all the banks involved" before opening the doors[2].

From September 1, customers of the participating banks will download the Wero app and link their bank account. Payconiq and Wero will run in parallel during the transition. All existing Payconiq features will carry over, but Wero promises more: subscription payments, cash on delivery, and shipment payments are on the roadmap.

The money moves directly from one account to another, same as Payconiq. Wero is already live in France, Belgium, and Germany. The Netherlands joins this year, Austria next. Discussions are underway with other countries, and the goal is interoperability with similar payment systems across southern and northern Europe.

Ananda Kautz from ABBL frames it as a strategic play: Luxembourg sits in the heart of Europe, millions cross its borders daily, and a solution that works in neighbouring countries is appealing. The country has always been innovative in payments[3].

Hamal takes it further. This is about sovereignty. "With the geopolitics that are playing out today, it is becoming more and more important to have European solutions, and not only at the level of payments," he said. "We see this in defence, we see this in the broader economy." Wero, he argues, will eventually offer every service in Europe that currently only companies like Visa or Apple provide.

Payment infrastructure is resilience, Kautz adds. The economy depends on it, and having a European solution with European governance and local decision-making makes sense.

Wero will not replace cards. It will sit alongside them as a digital wallet. The transition from Payconiq will be gradual, not abrupt. September 1 is just the start of the overlap.
