No Barbecues
The municipality of Esch-sur-Sure has advised of an increased fire risk due to the dry ground and the warm weather. Barbecues and other fires are now strictly forbidden at the beaches around the Upper Sure Lake, known locally as the Stausei. Municipal authorities have appealed to the public to follow the rules and avoid any behaviour which could potentially start a wildfire.[1]
The municipality has engaged additional security personnel from the Dussmann security company to monitor visitors and ensure the rules are adhered to. Further measures are planned but still need to be assessed, including towing away incorrectly parked vehicles that could obstruct emergency services' access to the site.[1]
The Upper Sure Lake was in this blog on July 1, when 120 incidents of speeding and vandalism were reported at the lake over a single weekend. Now the lake has a different problem: fire. The ground is dry. The weather is warm. The barbecues are banned. The security company is watching. The cars parked in the wrong place will be towed. The heatwave broke last week, but the ground is still dry, and dry ground is how fires start. A bin on Rue d'Epernay. A tree in Greisch. A hedge in Itzigerste. A barbecue at the lake. The difference between a barbecue and a wildfire is the wind.[1]
