Five Times a Year
According to a Statec survey of 4,000 residents, people in Luxembourg go on holiday at least five times a year on average. Last year resulted in historic highs for holidays, with 5.2 trips a year. Holiday costs are also at an all-time high, with the average trip costing 1,304 euros. Around 83% of participants spent a night away from home at least once in 2025. Statec reported 2.9 million trips among 470,000 people in Luxembourg.[1]
France remains the most popular destination, ahead of Germany, Portugal, Italy and Spain. Over half of all journeys are made by car, and the trips often last a week or less. City trips are most popular among Luxembourgers, with a third heading to the seaside, and 12% to the mountains. Business trips, unlike leisure trips, have reduced among Luxembourg residents. Just 16% of those who work spent a night abroad on business last year.[1]
Five times a year. 1,304 euros per trip. 2.9 million trips from 470,000 people. Three days ago, this blog reported that 83% of Luxembourg residents travelled, pipped by the Netherlands. Today, the same number appears in a different survey: 83% spent a night away from home. The average Luxembourger goes on holiday five times a year, spends 6,780 euros on holidays, and drives to France. The country has the highest rents in Europe, the eighth-lowest renewable energy in the EU, and 9,500 families on the housing waiting list. But the average resident takes five holidays a year. The averages do not describe the same person. The averages describe a country where some people take five holidays and some people wait for a house.[1]
